Gel-Seal 104

Product Description

ASTEK Gel-Seal 104 is a water-based penetrating sealer, dust-proofer and hardener for old and new concrete. Gel-Seal 104 reacts with the free lime in concrete to create a permanent gel which is a barrier to water penetration and also improves the durability of the concrete surface.

Key Benefits of Gel-Seal 104

  • Seals the concrete surface thereby reducing staining and chemical damage
  • Reacts with the free lime thereby increasing durability and eliminating dust
  • Contains no solvents, has no objectionable odours and is non-flammable
  • Reduces freeze / thaw damage
  • Is environmentally friendly to both applicator and owner
  • May be used as a primer for most surface coatings and toppings
  • Provides a permanent treatment for the concrete surface. Unlike surface coatings, Gel-Seal is not worn down by heavy traffic

Typical Applications

  • Dustproofing of plant floors, walkways and driveways
  • Oilproofing concrete storage tanks for mineral and vegetable oils
  • Oilproofing service station floors and lubricating areas
  • Sealing of concrete block walls
  • Increasing the acid resistance of concrete surfaces
  • Prevention of efflorescence on exterior walls
  • Weatherproofing exterior driveways and sidewalks
  • Surface primer for various coatings (contact Astek for specific recommendations)

Coverage

Coverage varies greatly depending on the quality and porosity of the surface and the desired level of protection and surface conditioning. It is recommended that the applicator perform a test application to determine the coverage on each project. Typically, coverage is approx. 200 sq.ft. per U.S. gallon or 50 sq.ft. per litre per coat. Two or three coats are usually required to obtain the necessary protection.

Method of Application

Concrete Block

Concrete blocks should be treated with 2 spray coats. Block should be at least 2 to 4 weeks old prior to coating. Spray nozzles should be cleaned immediately after use to prevent clogging.

New Concrete

Ideally, new concrete should be permitted to cure for one month prior to treating. The surface should be oil and dust free to ensure proper penetration. Brush, spray or mop the Gel-Seal into the surface repeating one or more times, allowing an interval of 12 hours between coats until the desired finish is achieved. Allow to cure for 24 hours before permitting foot traffic and 48 hours before allowing vehicle traffic on the surface.

Old Concrete

Old concrete should be cleaned thorough prior to treating. The surface should be oil and dust free to ensure proper penetration. Brush, spray or mop the Gel-Seal into the surface repeating one or more times, allowing an interval of 12 hours between coats until the desire finish is achieved. Allow to cure for 24 hours before permitting foot traffic and 48 hours before allowing vehicle traffic on the surface.

Curing Concrete

After freshly placed concrete has taken its preliminary set, cover and keep wet for 24 hours. Apply one coat of by spray or stiff broom. When the surface becomes matt (not shiny) apply one spray coat of Gel-Seal. Allow to cure for 24 hours before permitting foot traffic and 48 hours before allowing vehicle traffic on the surface.

Vermiculite

Vermiculite or other lightweight concretes are particularly porous. When tile is to be applied over them, the concrete should be treated with 2 coats to insure a good bond with the tile adhesive. The adhesive must be one that is not affected by alkalinity.

Caution!

On all horizontal applications do not allow Gel-Seal to pond while curing. The excess amount of material will create a white or frosty appearance (blooming). This may be difficult to remove when fully cured. Avoid contact with glass and aluminum. Rinse immediately. Do not apply when the ambient temperature is below freezing or when rain is anticipated.
